Understanding The Functions Of Different For…

7th Jul 2020

Like any other vehicle, forklifts rely on controls to offer forklift operators flexibility in the range of movements they can use for their tasks.

However, vehicles are different and so the forklift comes with a unique set of controls that enable it to perform its intended functions with great precision. These controls are - directional controls, lift controls, and forklift pedals.

Forklift Directional Controls

Directional controls determine how the forklift travels over a given floor space.

The directional controls always provide the forklift operator with three options - forward, reverse, and neutral.

The forward option enables the forklift to move forward, the reverse option enables the forklift to move backward while the neutral control is used for functions like parking.

Forklift Lift Controls

The lift controls are designed to determine the movement of the forks of the forklift along the mast.

There are two ways in which they enable this movement -lifting/lowering and tilting.

You can use them to lower or lift loaded or unloaded forks during operations and also tilt the forks to ensure the load is properly positioned for enhanced stability.

Forklift Pedals

There are three types of pedals normally found on a forklift and they determine how fast or slow the forklift is going to move and when it will stop.

The accelerator pedal is responsible for determining the speed of the forklift while the clutch pedal allows the operator to vary this speed by shifting gears.

The inching pedal allows for small varied movements to maneuver tight spaces while the braking pedal brings the forklift to a complete stop.

Therefore for a forklift to complete different movements needed for safe and efficient operations, they need to make use of the forklift controls. The directional controls will enable forward and backward movement, the lift controls will allow for vertical and tilting movement of the forks, and the pedal controls will determine how fast, far, or slow the forklift will move.
