What a Liner Flap Does

In a tube-type pneumatic tire assembly, the inner tube sits inside the tire casing and holds air pressure. The liner flap wraps around the inside of the wheel well between the tube and the rim. It serves three functions:

• Protects the tube from rim edges — multi-piece wheels, split rims, and lock ring assemblies have internal seams and edges that can cut or wear through a tube over time
• Reduces friction and heat — the flap acts as a buffer that absorbs movement between the tube and the wheel during operation
• Prevents pinch failures — without a flap, the tube can work into gaps between rim components and pinch flat under load

When You Need a Liner Flap

Liner flaps are required in most forklift tube-type assemblies, particularly on:

• Multi-piece wheels — where the rim has separate components that bolt together
• Split rim wheels — where the rim separates into halves for tire mounting
• Lock ring assemblies — where a removable ring holds the tire bead in place

If your current assembly includes a liner flap, always replace it when servicing the tire. Running a new tube on an old or missing flap is one of the most common causes of premature tube failure in forklift applications.

Tube-Type Assembly Components

A complete tube-type pneumatic tire setup includes three components that must all be matched to the same tire size and wheel:

When replacing any single component, inspect the other two. A worn flap paired with a new tube will shorten tube life. A damaged tube paired with a new flap still leaks air. Replacing all three during a tire service gives the longest service life.

Should I replace the liner flap every time I replace the tube?

Yes. Liner flaps wear over time from friction and heat cycling. Installing a new tube on an old or damaged flap defeats the purpose of the flap and can lead to early tube failure. Replace the flap whenever you replace the tube or tire for the longest service life.

Can I use a liner flap from a different tire size?

No. The flap must match the tire size and rim diameter exactly. An undersized flap leaves portions of the tube unprotected, while an oversized flap can bunch up inside the assembly and cause interference. Always order the flap that matches your specific tire size.
