10 Tips for Safe Forklift Operation

6th Dec 2018

A forklift is part of what is called heavy machinery. It solves many problems, but it also hides a number of risks. But you can avoid with the help of these tips.

1. When climbing the forklift, the operator must use the three-point rule. Also, never climb up the side of the levers.

2. The operator must turn on the forklift once it is installed, never before. During the entire operation, hands and legs must remain inside the cab.

3. Only the operator should ride on the forklift, so there should be a sign prohibiting other people from being carried, lifted, or lowered.

4. The operator must control the speed of the forklift taking into account possible incidents (such as slippery or cracked surfaces, distracted pedestrians, etc.).

5. The forklift should not carry more weight than it can (the amount indicated in your manual). The equipment itself is heavy and therefore does not stop quickly and this will make it more difficult to avoid overloading.

6. A forklift is ultimately a vehicle, so the operator should not exceed the statutory driving hours. If operations are to continue, they must be replaced.

7. It is recommended to install a protective visor of planks in the access to the platform of the forklift in order to protect it of impacts by fall of materials.

8. The mechanical elements of the motor of each forklift must be properly covered by a protective frame.

9. The platform of the forklift must be surrounded by a railing covered by an electro welded mesh.

10. Once operation is complete, the forklift must be parked on a flat, hard surface, its forks lowered to ground level, and the parking brake activated (with engine off).

When operating a forklift, unexpected and particular situations arise that challenge the operator's expertise. Be on the lookout for The Forklift Tire Company upcoming articles because not only will we tell you which are the main ones, but we will also advise you how to successfully deal with them.
