Question: How can one get the right forklift hydraulic fluid levels?

The hydraulic fluid is one of the most important fluids that enables the forklift to function properly for its lifting and steering functions.

It is recommended that you check its levels every day before operating the forklift with a replacement coming in after 1,000 hours of operating the forklift.

However, during routine checks, you can fail to get accurate levels of the fluid. Here are three ways you can avoid that;

Park On Even Ground

Ensure you park the forklift on even ground, switch it off and engage the brakes.

Parking on even ground helps to have the hydraulic fluid evenly distributed within the system to ensure you can establish the correct fluid levels.

Level ground parking will also prevent the fluid from leaking out of the reservoir when opened for inspection.

Lower the Mast And Carriage

Hydraulic fluid is vital for the proper functioning of the forklift mast.

When the mast and carriage are raised the hydraulic system is engaged and therefore the amount of the fluid in the reservoir will be misleading.

Therefore if you need an accurate reading you should ensure the mast and carriage lowered to the ground and in a neutral position.

Proper Use Of the Dipstick

The dipstick is the most accurate way to measure hydraulic fluid levels. However, you should be keen to use it the right way for it to be helpful.

It usually has a top and bottom mark on it that show the levels of the fluid in the system. You should always ensure the fluid reaches the top mark as it is a signal of satisfactory hydraulic fluid levels.

Therefore to get the right hydraulic fluid readings first you should always make sure you have parked your forklift on even ground. The mast and the carriage should also be lowered to the ground and in a neutral position. Finally, make sure the fluid is above the upper marking of the dipstick. If you find out the fluid levels are lower then make sure you refill the reservoir using manufacturer recommend fluid.
