Rubber press-on tires, commonly referred to as cushion tires, are solid rubber forklift tires bonded to a precision 3/8" steel press-on ring. These tires are designed to mount onto flat-base industrial press-on wheels using a hydraulic press, creating a secure interference fit for long-term performance.
How Cushion Tires Are Measured
Cushion press-on tires are measured by overall diameter × width × inside diameter (wheel size). For example, a 21x7x15 tire measures approximately 21 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and presses onto a 15-inch wheel. After accounting for the bonded steel ring, this provides approximately 5-5/8 inches of usable rubber compound.
Why Choose Rubber Cushion Tires?
Rubber cushion tires provide built-in shock absorption compared to harder polyurethane alternatives. The natural flex of the rubber compound reduces operator fatigue while improving ride comfort in warehouse and light industrial applications.
For optimal performance, cushion tires are typically replaced once approximately 2 inches of rubber have worn away.
Smooth vs Traction Tread
The most common configuration is a smooth tread cushion tire. Smooth tires contain the maximum rubber volume and provide excellent surface contact, making them suitable for most warehouse environments.
Traction tread options, including deep lug or bar grip non-directional patterns, are available for applications requiring additional grip. While tread patterns can improve traction, smooth tires generally offer longer wear due to increased rubber mass.
Non-Marking Cushion Tires
Non-marking rubber cushion tires are manufactured without carbon black, preventing floor marking in warehouse environments. These compounds are often required in OSHA-regulated or ISO-controlled operations and are commonly used in food, pharmaceutical, and clean manufacturing facilities.
If reduced rolling resistance and maximum cleanliness are priorities, polyurethane press-on tires may also be considered.
